Create Character Art for App Store Screenshots

App Store and Google Play screenshots are the single most important conversion surface for app discovery — they appear before description, before reviews, before icon. Character-led screenshots (one mascot pointing at the feature, reacting to the feature, celebrating the feature) outperform pure UI screenshots in tap-through rate. Generate a multi-angle character pack once, crop pose-specific renders for each of the 5–8 screenshot slots, and composite over device frames with feature copy. Apple wants 6.7" and 5.5" iPhone screenshots; Google Play wants 16:9 phone and 7" tablet.

    Plan the 5-screenshot conversion arc

Screenshot 1 = hook (what is this app?). Screenshot 2 = primary feature. Screenshot 3 = social proof or differentiation. Screenshot 4 = secondary feature. Screenshot 5 = CTA / value summary. Assign a character pose to each — waving, pointing, presenting, demonstrating, celebrating.

  2. 02

    Generate the multi-angle character pack

Run the 8-angle generator. You get more poses than you need for 5 screenshots, with backup variants in case any pose does not crop cleanly over the device frame.

  3. 03

    Composite over device frames

Apple provides device frame templates (iPhone 16 Pro Max). Use Figma, Sketch, or Screenshot Maker. Place the device mockup, layer the character above or beside it pointing at the feature, and add the headline text on top.

  4. 04

Render at exact App Store / Play Store specs

Apple iPhone 6.7" portrait: 1290×2796px. Apple iPhone 5.5": 1242×2208px. Google Play phone: 1080×1920 min, 16:9. Render character art at 1536px max AI, composite at native screenshot resolution, export PNG.

  5. 05

    Localize screenshots per market

App Store Connect supports per-locale screenshots. Swap the headline text and character pose per market if needed (a celebratory pose for one region, a thoughtful pose for another) — the multi-angle pack lets you avoid re-rendering per locale.

  • Apple App Store Connect allows up to 10 screenshots per device size — most successful apps ship 5–7, weighting the first 3 since users scroll less than 3 cards on average.
  • High-contrast background panels behind the device frame boost screenshot conversion ~10–15% versus white background — the screenshot competes against neighboring listings.
  • Headline copy stays under 6 words on each screenshot — anything longer wraps and reduces tap-through.
  • Generate the character at 1536px max AI resolution; downsample to 600–800px for the screenshot composition. Upscaling looks soft.
  • For app icons, use a tightly-cropped version of the same character (face only, centered) — keeps store listing visually cohesive.
  • Honest framing: AI-generated screenshot art accelerates production but does not replace A/B testing — Apple Search Ads and Google Play Experiments are still where you find the converting variant.
  • Render at full resolution and composite at native screenshot size — raw AI output below that needs an upscale pass for App Store-quality screenshots.
