Design Cartoon Character Reference Sheets

Cartoon character reference sheets are construction documents — they show other artists not just what the character looks like, but how to build them from simple shapes. Every great cartoon character can be deconstructed into circles, ovals, and rectangles, and the reference sheet must reveal this underlying construction.

  1. 01

    Create the construction breakdown

Generate the character as an overlay of basic shapes: head circle, body oval, limb cylinders. This teaches other artists to draw the character from scratch.

  2. 02

    Generate full turnaround views

Front, three-quarter, side, three-quarter back, back. Show both the finished character and the construction shapes underneath.

  3. 03

    Build the expression range

Cartoon expressions use squash and stretch. Generate: neutral, maximum happy (face wider), maximum angry (face compressed), surprised (face stretched tall), and sad.

  4. 04

Create the "do and don't" guide

Generate correct and deliberately incorrect proportions side by side: "head too small," "body too tall," "arms too short." This prevents common off-model mistakes.

  5. 05

    Add action pose reference

Generate 4-6 dynamic poses showing the character in motion: running, jumping, falling, reaching, sitting, and sleeping. These show how proportions adapt to action.

  • Construction circles should be visible in the final reference — they are the most useful part of a cartoon ref sheet
  • Include a "line of action" guide showing how the character spine curves in different poses
  • Note which features are flexible (stretchy arms, big expressions) and which are rigid (hat shape, shirt logo placement)
  • Cartoon characters often have a "default pose" they return to — define and document this clearly
