EZ Character + ZBrush: Orthographic Reference to Digital Sculpting Pipeline
Generate locked multi-angle character references in EZ Character. Import front and profile as ZBrush background references. Sculpt to orthographic precision.
Why this combination
ZBrush is the digital sculpting standard for film, games, and collectibles. Every sculpt starts from orthographic reference. EZ Character provides front, profile, and three-quarter references locked to the same character. Import as ZBrush image planes, align to the grid, and sculpt with confidence that the character will read correctly from every viewing angle.
Step-by-step workflow
- 1
Generate the orthographic reference set
Upload your character to EZ Character. Generate front, profile, and back views at maximum resolution. Neutral lighting, clear silhouette.
- 2
Import into ZBrush
In ZBrush, go to Draw mode. Open the Grid palette. Use "See-through" or place reference images on the background using the Image Plane plugin or a custom ZScript.
- 3
Align and scale references
Align the front and profile references so key landmarks (eyes, nose, chin, shoulders, hips) sit at the same height. Scale to match your intended sculpt dimensions.
- 4
Block out primary forms
Using ZSpheres or DynaMesh, block out the major volumes against the reference. Switch between front and profile views to match proportions.
- 5
Sculpt secondary and tertiary detail
Refine the sculpt with the ¾ and back EZ Character references for validation. Every angle of the character is defined in the reference set.
Pro tips
- Generate references at 4096px for hero sculpts — ZBrush detail work benefits from high-resolution reference
- Use ZBrush's "Floor" grid to align the character's feet across front and side views
- Generate separate clothed and unclothed reference versions for base anatomy + costume sculpting layers
- The back view is your most underused reference — sculpt back details with the same precision as the front
