What Is Live2D?
Live2D Cubism is a 2D animation technology that deforms a layered character illustration to create the illusion of 3D movement. It is the standard technology for VTuber character rigging, used by the vast majority of VTubers on YouTube and Twitch to animate their 2D character avatars in real-time.
In depth
Live2D, developed by Japanese company Live2D Inc., solves a specific problem: how to animate a 2D illustrated character with 3D-like movement without building a 3D model. The technique works by separating a character illustration into layers (hair front, hair back, face, body, clothing, accessories), importing them into Live2D Cubism, and setting up a deformation mesh (warp) and parameter system. When the VTuber's face tracking software (VSeeFace, PrprLive, VTube Studio) detects a head turn, blink, or mouth movement, it drives the corresponding Live2D parameters, deforming the 2D layers to simulate 3D rotation and expression. The quality of the Live2D model depends heavily on the quality of the reference illustration — clean layer separation, consistent facial proportions, and well-defined expression targets. EZ Character generates the reference layer (the multi-angle character set) that Live2D riggers use as their starting point.
