What Is a Character Model Sheet?
A character model sheet (or character bible) is the complete visual specification for a character — including orthographic turnarounds, expression ranges, pose samples, costume variants, colour palettes, and proportion guides. It is the authoritative reference document that every artist on a production uses to keep the character on-model.
In depth
The model sheet originated in animation production as a quality-control tool — when dozens of artists draw the same character hundreds of times, they need a single reference that defines what "correct" looks like. Disney's Nine Old Men established the model sheet as a formal production document in the 1930s and 1940s. A complete modern model sheet includes: front/¾/profile/back orthographic views (the turnaround), an expression sheet (6–12 emotions), 2–4 key action poses, a colour palette with hex/RGB/CMYK values, costume construction notes, a proportion guide (head-height scale), and often a mouth chart for dialogue animation. In game development, the model sheet serves the same function for both 2D sprites and 3D character modelling reference. AI tools like EZ Character can now generate the core components of a model sheet — turnaround and expressions — in minutes.
